How Do You Pick a Good Chiropractor?

If you have never been to a chiropractor before, and are not sure how to select a good one, then you might want to ask the following questions:

Is the chiropractor experienced? Has he been treating patients for a long time? The more experienced the chiropractor is, the more effective the adjustments will be.  Dr. Fish has been a chiropractor for over 27 years and has adjusted thousands of patients. Most of his patients feel better after the first treatment, and don’t require any follow up visits.  Therefore he successfully eliminates their pain and discomfort.

How much time will the chiropractor spend with me?  Dr. Fish spends close to 1/2 to 1 hour with every new patient. He takes his time to be thorough, and adjust every part of the body—not necessarily just the area  that feels painful or misaligned.  Will the chiropractor do a thorough and complete examination and diagnosis?  Dr. Fish does a complete and thorough examination prior to rendering a diagnosis and treatment.

On the average, how many adjustments will be necessary before I can get relief? Most patients feel better after the first adjustment, but sometimes will require further treatment; it all depends on the patient’s condition, how long their body has been out of alignment, and what type of injury, if any, the patient has experienced.

Has the chiropractor had any negative complaints against him? Dr. Fish is in good standing with the malpractice insurance company and has never had a claim brought against him.

Is the chiropractor licensed? Is he the doctor in good-standing with the chiropractic board?  Dr. Fish is licensed in both California and Arizona, and is in good-standing with both state boards.

Therefore, chiropractic treatment appears to be a much safer approach than traditional medicine.  A wise approach may be to use chiropractic first, and drugs or surgery only as a last resort.

Chiropractic treatment vs. a medical approach—which is safest?

Chiropractic vs. a Medical Approach%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care VanThe High Risk of a Medical Approach

Chiropractic Treatment vs. a medical approach : According to Lucian Leape, a researcher at Harvard Medical School of Public Health, adverse events occurred in 3.7% of all hospitalizations.  Of those cases in which adverse events occurred, 13.6% of those cases resulted in death.

This same researcher stated the risk of dying from a medical accident is 1 in 200; to give you some perspective, the likelihood of dying in an aviation accident is 1 in 2,000.000.

Further, in an article Death by Medicine, written by Gary Null, Ph.D; Carolyn Dean MD, ND; Martin Feldman, MD; Deborah Rasio, MD; and Dorothy Smith Ph.D it was reported that:

  • 2 million people per year experience adverse reactions to prescribed drugs while in the hospital
  • 20 million unnecessary antibiotics per year are prescribed for viral infections
  • 5 million unnecessary medical and surgical procedures per year are performed
  • 9 million people are unnecessarily hospitalized per year

In addition, 783, 936 deaths occur per year which are caused by conventional medicine.

The (Failure) of Medical Treatment Options:

Use of Non Steriodal Anti-Inflammatories (NSAIDs):  In 1998, Dr. Singh, of the Stanford University of Medicine reviewed 11,000 arthritis patients.  He extrapolated that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for NSAID-related internal bleeding and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur yearly among arthritis patients alone.

Acetaminophen: On July 2, 2001, an article in the U.S. News & World report suggested 36% of acute liver failures are linked to acetaminophen.

Neck Pain: An article written by Dabbs V Lauretti in 1995 in which he reviewed literature comparing cervical manipulation (a chiropractic approach) vs. NSAIDs (a medical approach) found that the best evidence indicates that cervical manipulation for neck pain is safer than use of NSAIDs, by a factor of several hundred times.

The Odds are Against the Medical Approach to Treatment

  • Spinal or back surgery fail 74% of the time
  •  2.1% chance of serious adverse drug reaction
  •  5-6% chance of acquiring a nosocomial infection
  •  4-36% chance of having a medical error or adverse drug reaction
  • 17% chance of a procedure error

The (Lesser) Risk of a Chiropractic Approach to Treatment

In 1993, a renowned health care economist was hired in Canada to review chiropractic treatment for efficacy and cost-savings.

For Low Back Pain Chiropractic Treatment is Best

  • For low back pain, chiropractic management is more cost-effective than medical management
  • Many medical therapies are of questionable validity or are clearly inadequate
  • There is no clinical research or case-control studies that shows or implies that chiropractic spinal manipulation is unsafe in the treatment of low back pain. Some medical treatments are equally safe, but others are unsafe and generate complications for certain patients
  • Empirical evidence suggests that patients are very satisfied with chiropractic management of low back pain, and considerably less satisfied with a medical treatment

Therefore, chiropractic treatment appears to be a much safer approach than traditional medicine.  A wise approach may be to use chiropractic first, and drugs or surgery only as a last resort.

Are cheap vitamins safe to take?

Are Cheap Vitamins safe to take? | Cheap Vitamins

Did you know that vitamins are not regulated by the FDA? Therefore it is extremely important to buy vitamins from reputable companies; one of the things to look for is “GMP”–good manufacturing practice. This is a concept that ensures products are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards. It is designed to minimize the risks to the patient involved in any pharmaceutical production. GMP constitutes the license to operate in pharmaceutical manufacturing, and is a core condition worldwide.

Expensive Vs. Cheap Vitamins

When it comes to choosing the right vitamins, price doesn’t matter. The label is what is the most important. If you’re considering a vitamin supplement, read the label and compare information as well as ingredients. Some vitamins — even the expensive ones — may contain more fillers than the actual ingredient. In other instances, you may need to examine the bottle to ensure they are geared specifically for you and not the opposite sex or a completely different age group. Always ensure that the particular vitamin you choose meets the standards set by testing organizations to ensure strength, purity, dissolution and disintegration. Even inexpensive, or cheap, vitamins can pass all of these tests and still provide a quality supplement.

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is a system for ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards. It is designed to minimize the risks involved in any pharmaceutical production that cannot be eliminated through testing the final product.

GMP covers all aspects of production from the starting materials, premises, and equipment to the training and personal hygiene of staff. Detailed written procedures are essential for each process that could affect the quality of the finished product. There must be systems to provide documented proof that correct procedures are consistently followed at each step in the manufacturing process – every time a product is made.

Coronavirus: how to boost your immunity

%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care Van

With more and more people fearful of getting sick from the coronavirus, more and more people are trying to increase their immunity, to help avoid getting the coronavirus.

Here are some great foods that are known to increase immunity:

Citrus-Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells, which are key to fighting infections.

Red bell peppers-these have one of the highest levels of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps build up our white blood cells, helps build up our immunity

Broccoli-Broccoli is packed with phytochemicals and antioxidants that support our immune system. It also contains vitamin E, an antioxidant that can help fight off bacteria and viruses.

Garlic-Garlic contains compounds that help the immune system fight germs

Ginger-ginger extract raises significantly the thymus index, spleen index, percentage of phagocytosis, and thus improves the immunologic function relating to tumors. Ginger extract causes apoptosis (cell death) of breast carcinoma cells,  inhibits cell growth and modulates angiogenic factor in ovarian cancer cells.

Spinach-Spinach may boost the immune system, as it contains many essential nutrients and antioxidants, including flavanoids, carotenoids, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E

Yogurt-Yogurt is rich in probiotics , microorganisms that are known to be gut-friendly and strengthening of the immune system. Eating yogurt every day can increase the level of good bacteria in your gut and can improve your first line of defense against pathogens. Notably, your gut flora constitutes 70 per cent of the immune system.

Almonds-Riboflavin in almonds also plays a role in strengthening the immune system by attaching itself to protein enzymes called flavoproteins and encouraging oxygen based energy production.  Also, naturally occurring chemicals found in the skin of the nut boost the immune system’s response to such infections.

Turmeric-Studies suggest that turmeric can help provide a boost to the white blood cells that help your immune system  fight off bacteria, viruses and other ailments

Green tea-The magical ingredient in green tea is a polyphenol called EGCG, which is already known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer characteristics. EGCG, crucially, helps create more regulatory T cells without affecting our DNA, meaning, while it is not as powerful as some drugs, it causes less incidental damage.

Papaya-As a rich source of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, papaya helps boost the immune system by removing toxins from the body. This helps keep illnesses and infections away.

Kiwi-A single 100 gram serving of the fruit is known to fulfil up to 154% of the daily Vitamin C requirement, as per the USDA. The consumption of Vitamin C helps build a healthy immune system and aids the body’s fight against diseases.

Sunflower seeds-These contain selenium which help your body fight against certain cancers, while also helping your immune system to control cell damage.

Shellfish-Shellfish have a high amount of zinc, which helps to boost immune system function and promote healing. Research shows that when consumed at the first sign of the sniffles, zinc can help reduce the length and severity of sickness.

Eat a variety of these foods to make sure you get all your nutrients–Bon appetit!

The dangers of overeating

%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care Van

The holidays are a time to spend time with family and enjoy really good food. Sometimes this may cause us to overeating and believe it or not, this can pose some serious health concerns.  This is not surprising, as the body lets you know you ate too much as it makes you feel bad.  This is what I like to call a “food hangover”.

Overeating not only causes you to gain weight, but it impacts your sleep, puts stress on your organs, and increases your chances of serious health conditions.

How does this happen?

When we consume large quantities of good, our stomach has to secrete extra hormones and enzymes to break down the food; since we have a limited amount of these enzymes in our body, our food remains in the stomach longer and therefore is likely to turn to fat.  Hence, the weight gain.

Our body only has a limited supply of blood and energy, so when large quantities of food are consumed, most of the blood and energy is devoted towards the breakdown of the food and there are less resources available for the brain and limbs.  This puts a lot of stress on our body.

Organ malfunctioning is another health risk due to overeating.  The organs that are mostly impacted are the kidney, liver, and the stomach  as these organs are those that take part in the digestion and assimilation of food but there are organs that are impacted as well.  The stress placed on these organs makes them more prone to disorders.

Overeating impacts your sleep patterns too, by disrupting your circadian clock.  Your circadian clock is the system that regulates your sleep and hormone levels.  Therefore when you overeat, the hormone levels are impacted, and your sleep pattern is disrupted.

So the next time you are enjoying a holiday meal, think twice before having two or more servings of food; remember the phraise, “everything in moderation”.

Stretch all day long and reap the benefits!

%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care VanWe all know to stretch before exercise as it will help us to avoid injuries but did you know that stretching all day long is very beneficial?  Not only that, it makes you feel really good.

How does the body benefit from stretching?

Given the current Coronavirus safety measures, with most people working from home, oftentimes they do not have a proper desk, seating area, or workstation.  Most people are sitting on a couch, bed, or uncomfortable chair; further, instead of a desk, they may be placing their computer on a coffee or dining table.  These uncomfortable conditions lead to pain and discomfort.

Other things can cause discomfort as well.  Ever wake up in the morning feeling tired and sore? This is often caused by the wrong sleep position, a bad pillow, or a worn mattress. If you stretch first thing when you wake up, all those muscles that have tightened up during the night will loosen up and alleviate a lot of the pain.  Besides that, this stretching will make you feel good.

Also, tense muscles play a big factor in creating bad posture which can shorten the muscles in the back, chest and shoulders and cause pain when you move–if you stretch these muscles during the day the muscles won’t shorten, posture is restored, and the pain is eliminated.

Stretching on a regular basis improves blood flow which in turn regulates body temperature, improve circulation, and sharpen concentration.

Stretching also opens up the spine, giving a refreshing “rush” of energy.

Besides that, stretching makes you feel good!  Stretching, along with all physical activity,  increases the production of endorphins.  Endorphins are the neurotransmitters in the brain that can elevate mood and alleviate pain and depression.

So, avoid pain —keep your body moving, and stretch all day long, not just before exercising.

Which oatmeal is best for Type 2 Diabetes

%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care VanHow Eating Oatmeal May Help You Manage Your Weight, Blood Sugar Diabetes-free

Not all oatmeal is the same–some are better than others when it comes to type 2 diabetes.

Although oatmeal is high in carbohydrates — which people with type 2 diabetes need to watch out for — it’s a food that’s low to medium on the glycemic index (GI) when it’s prepared with minimal processing. Meaning: It’s more slowly digested and metabolized, resulting in a lower rise in blood sugar.

High Fiber Content May Help You Manage Blood Sugar

%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care Van

A filling bowl of the right oatmeal topped with berries and nuts can be a good start to the day.  Oatmeal, that hearty, humble breakfast staple, can be a great addition to a diet for those who have diabetes.  A widely available whole grain, oats are rich in fiber along with essential minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, calcium,  and iron.   Oats has also been associated with improved cardiovascular conditions, including a reduced risk of heart disease and lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.

The type of  fiber  may help with blood sugar control as well as weight maintenance. One of the simplest ways to fit healthy oats into your diet is by eating more oatmeal.

How does high fiber reduce blood sugar?

Fiber is important for everyone, but even more crucial for people who have diabetes.  The reason is that foods rich in fiber slow down the time it takes to digest food, which then slows down the release of glucose (blood sugar) in the small intestine.  Oats contain about  4 grams of fiber, so it is a significant fiber source.

Most people get less than one half of the fiber they require each day; men should try to get 38 grams of fiber daily while women should aim for 25 grams.  In addition to oatmeal, other great sources of fiber are whole grains, fruit, vegetables and legumes.

Does Noom work?

%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care VanDuring the holiday season it may be difficult to keep the pounds off–a lot of people have been hearing about the Noom diet, which is a health and fitness app that starts off by asking users to set up their target weight and record their current weight.

The users then record their daily food intake and activity/exercise.  They also get assigned a health coach.

The app then generates reports displaying the user’s weight rends, calories and nutritional summaries along with suggestions as to the types of exercises that could be done to achieve the user’s desired weight.

It uses a unique traffic light system to rank foods according to how many calories they contain.

“Green” foods, such as spinach and broccoli, are the least calorie dense, whereas “red” foods contain more calories and should make up less of a portion.

Using these data, the app’s creators develop personalized weight loss plans that they claim can help deliver long lasting weight loss results.

To get a personalized weight loss plan, a person will need to purchase a subscription and answer some questions on the Noom website or app. The algorithm will then design a weight loss plan to fit the person’s needs.

Affter a person logs in for the first time, the app will pair them with an appropriate health coach. The coach will provide relevant dietary information and advice to help the person achieve their weight goals.

Overall, from a study conducted of users from October 10, 2012 to April 4, 2014, and excluding certain app users for various reasons, overall the user’s lost 10% or more, with the highest percentage of lost weight being men.

One of the most important factors influencing the results was the input of the user’s dinner food intake-those that entered that data appeared to lose more weight.

What does a chiropractor do?

%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care VanIf you have never been to a chiropractor, are you wondering what does a chiropractor do?  Have you ever wondered what is a chiropractic adjustment?  What should I expect?  How long does it take to feel better?

First the chiropractor will take your medical history and perform a physical examination.  This examination includes orthopedic and neurological tests that test for range of motion and the functioning of the spine and extremities.  In addition, this examination includes taking the patient’s blood pressure, measuring his or her height and weight, and sometimes ordering X-rays.  After diagnosing the condition, the chiropractor will render treatment, which is also called a chiropractic adjustment or manipulation.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which trained specialists (chiropractors) use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. The goal of this procedure, also known as spinal manipulation, is to improve spinal motion and improve your body’s physical function, and alleviate pain.

What can I expect after the adjustment?

The most common reaction to a chiropractic adjustment is aching or soreness in the spinal joints or muscles.

How do I prepare for a chiropractic adjustment?

No special preparation is required before a spinal manipulation, just be prepared to give the chiropractor your medical history and information as to how and/or when the painful condition started.

How many chiropractic treatments will it take to “cure” my condition?

Chiropractic treatment may require a series of visits to your chiropractor, but most people attain maximum improvement in six to 10 visits. After these initial treatments, it is wise to maintain the improved condition of the body and spine by getting adjusted on a periodic basis.  This will reduce the likelihood that the condition will worsen or return.  It also ensures that if the condition does return, the recovery time is shortened.

Mental Health and Chiropractic Care

%Santa Clarita Chiropractor %Chiropractic Care VanIf anxiety or depression is an mental issue, chiropractic care may help.

A chiropractor takes advantage of the  mind-body approach so that when a person is adjusted, endorphins are released, making the person “feel” better, improving his or her mental outlook.  In addition to chiropractic adjustments, chiropractors take a holistic approach and look at physical therapy, exercise, diet, and supplements.

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental illnesses people suffer from in the United States and depression is the most prevalent cause of disability.

Some of the most common physical symptoms of anxiety and depression are:

  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Body aches
  • Inability to relax

How does chiropractic treatment alleviate these symptoms?

1. A lowering of blood pressure is a best  chiropracting to keep good Mental

There have been studies that show that chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy reduce blood pressure and stress symptoms.   2.

2.  All natural approach

Patients taking anxiety and depression medications often experience side effects.  Since chiropractic combats anxiety and depression symptoms, a patient could potentially reduce the amount of medication that they are currently taking, but only under the advice and supervision of their medical doctor.

3.  Spinal manipulation triggers a positive hormone response

Studies show that after getting a chiropractic adjustment, your body triggers an increase in hormones such as neurotensin, oxytocin, and cortisol. These hormones are involved in positive nervous system functioning, such as:

  • Neurotensin: neutralizes stress-induced pain
  • Oxytocin: boosts neuro-communication and feelings of social bonding
  • Cortisol: blocks pain deriving from inflammation

4.  Help a person sleep better to remove Mental Pressure

Studies suggest  that some chiropractic manipulation may improve patient sleep patterns

5. Relieves tension, stiffness and headaches

Patients with anxiety and/or depression also suffer from muscular tension, which contributes to headaches. Chiropractic care can aid in reducing tension and stiffness. In addition, it can help relieve pain related to tension headaches, as many patients who live with mental health disorders also suffer from migraines. This kind of relief can have a big impact on those with anxiety and/or depression by removing these painful symptoms.

6. Encourages relaxation to get Mental Health

Last but not least, chiropractic care helps relax patients. The atmosphere of a chiropractic session can make the patient feel less stressed and his/her muscles more relaxed. Studies that measure electrical activity in muscles found that after a chiropractic adjustment, muscle activity was reduced by 25%. This is great evidence of relaxation during a chiropractic session. This kind of relaxation can really help patients suffering from stress and tension as a result of anxiety and/or depression.

Overall, chiropractic care can have a positive impact on patients’ mental health.

If you’re looking for relief from your mental health symptoms, chiropractic care is a proven method that may improve your quality of life in the long run.
